Do You Have a Hidden Water Leak?

If your water bill jumps for no clear reason, your water meter moves while nothing is running, or you see damp spots, stains or mold, you probably have a hidden leak. Most slow leaks are not emergencies, but they should be found within days, not months. The water keeps costing you money, and over time it can rot wood, ruin drywall and grow mold.

Water coming through a ceiling, a pipe spraying, or water you cannot stop is different: that is an emergency. Turn off your main water valve and call right away.

How to Check for a Leak with Your Water Meter

Your water meter is the simplest leak detector you have. The U.S. EPA suggests this check:

  1. Pick a time when no one will use water for about two hours, for example overnight or while everyone is out.
  2. Make sure everything is off: taps, toilets, washing machine, dishwasher, ice maker and outdoor hoses.
  3. Find your water meter and write down the reading, or take a photo of it.
  4. Wait two hours without using any water.
  5. Read the meter again. If the number has changed at all, you probably have a leak.

Many meters also have a small leak indicator, often a tiny triangle or star-shaped dial, that turns when even a little water flows. If it moves while everything is off, water is going somewhere.

Toilets are the most common cause, so check them next (see below). If the toilets pass and the meter still moves, the leak is probably in a pipe — inside the house or in the line from the street. That is when a plumber is needed.

Leaks Inside Walls, Ceilings and Floors

Most hidden leaks in a house come from supply pipes (the pipes under pressure that bring water in), drain pipes under sinks, tubs and showers, or the hoses and connections to toilets, dishwashers and washing machines. The signs are usually slow: a brown ring on the ceiling under a bathroom, paint bubbling, baseboards swelling, or a floor that feels soft.

What to do first:

  • If water is dripping or spreading, turn off the main water valve. Not sure where it is? See how to find your main water shut-off valve.
  • Keep away from wet outlets and light fittings, and turn off power to that area if it is safe to reach the breaker.
  • Take photos of the damage before you clean up, in case you need them for insurance.

A plumber usually finds a hidden leak by testing the pressure in the pipes, listening for the sound of escaping water, and using moisture meters or thermal cameras. The aim is to find the exact spot first, so only a small piece of wall or ceiling needs to be opened.

Check Your Toilets First

A toilet can leak for months without anyone noticing, because the water runs quietly into the bowl. Put a few drops of food coloring in the tank and wait 10 minutes without flushing. If color shows up in the bowl, the toilet is leaking. Flush afterwards so the tank does not stain. For causes and fixes, see toilet repair in Altoona.

Water around your hot water tank is a separate problem — see water heater repair.

Your Pipe or the Water Authority’s?

For Altoona Water Authority (AWA) customers, the dividing point is the curb stop: a shut-off valve in a small box near the street or property line.

  • Water main to the curb stop: installed by the AWA. If the leak is in the street or before the curb stop, call the AWA at (814) 949-2540 (24/7).
  • Curb stop to your house, and all pipes inside: this is the property owner’s line. The AWA’s rules say it is not responsible for maintaining it, or for damage from water escaping from it.
  • The curb stop is the AWA’s valve. To stop the water yourself, use your own main valve inside the house.

One more rule to know: the AWA says no bill allowance is made for extra water used because of leaks or waste. In plain words, water lost through a leak on your side is billed like normal use — another reason to find it early.

Leak Detection Questions from Altoona Homeowners

Why is my water bill suddenly high?

The most common reasons are a running toilet, a dripping tap or a hidden pipe leak. Do the two-hour meter test: if the meter moves while all water is off, you have a leak. If it does not move, compare your use with the same month last year, or call the Altoona Water Authority at (814) 949-2540 to check the reading.

How do I know if I have a leak inside a wall?

Look for a stain or ring on the ceiling or wall, bubbling paint, swollen baseboards, a musty smell, or the sound of running water when nothing is on. A meter that moves with all water off is the clearest sign.

Is a hidden water leak an emergency?

Usually not. A slow leak should be found within days. It becomes an emergency when water is coming through a ceiling, spreading across a floor, or getting near electrics — turn off the main water valve and call right away.

Who pays to fix a leak in the water line outside my house?

For Altoona Water Authority customers, the line from the curb stop to your house belongs to the property owner, so the owner pays for that repair. A leak in the street or before the curb stop is the AWA’s — call them at (814) 949-2540. Other towns may have different suppliers and rules.
