Cost & Pricing
How much does a plumber cost in Altoona?
Altoona-area customers typically report about $69–$90 for a standard service call and about $200 at night or on weekends, before any repair work. Common repairs run from a few hundred dollars to about $2,000. See the full Altoona plumbing price guide.
Do plumbers charge just to come and look?
Most charge a service or diagnostic fee. Some put it toward the repair if you go ahead. Ask what the fee includes before anyone comes out.
Is flat-rate or hourly pricing better?
Flat-rate gives you one price for the whole job up front; hourly can be cheaper for very quick jobs but adds up if problems appear. Either way, get the price before work starts.
Why is a plumber more expensive at night or on weekends?
After-hours visits usually cost 1.5–3 times the normal rate. If you can shut off the water and the problem isn’t getting worse, waiting until morning can save money.
Can the price go up after work starts?
Sometimes a plumber finds a bigger problem, such as a cracked old pipe. A good plumber stops, explains what they found and gives you a new price before continuing. You can say no.
Plumbing Emergencies
Can I get a plumber in Altoona at night, on Sunday or on a holiday?
Yes. Calls are answered 24/7, including nights, weekends and holidays. See our 24/7 emergency plumber page for what to do while you wait.
What counts as a plumbing emergency?
Water you can’t stop, sewage backing up into the house, no water or no heat in freezing weather, and a leaking hot water tank. A dripping faucet or one slow drain can usually wait.
What should I do first if a pipe bursts?
Shut off the main water valve, stay away from water near outlets, open a faucet on the lowest floor to drain the pipes, then call.
I smell gas. Should I call a plumber?
Not first. Leave the house, don’t switch lights on or off, and call Peoples Natural Gas or 911 from outside. A plumber comes once the gas company says it’s safe.
Frozen Pipes & Winter
When should I drip my faucets in Altoona?
The Altoona Water Authority recommends letting faucets on outside walls drip when it’s 28°F or colder for four hours or more, and opening cabinet doors under those sinks. More in our frozen pipes guide.
How do I thaw a frozen pipe safely?
Open the faucet, then warm the pipe slowly with a hair dryer or a space heater you stay with. Never use an open flame. If you can’t find the frozen spot or see a crack, shut off the main valve and call.
What temperature should I keep my house at when I’m away?
Above 55°F, according to the Altoona Water Authority. For longer trips you can also shut off the main valve and drain the faucets.
Who pays if my water meter freezes?
The homeowner. Under Altoona Water Authority rules, the customer pays for meter damage caused by freezing, including labor.
Drains, Sewers & Altoona Water Authority Rules
Who is responsible for my sewer line: me or the Altoona Water Authority?
In the City of Altoona, the property owner is responsible for the sewer line from the house to the property line, including the cleanout there. The Altoona Water Authority is responsible from the property line to the main. Read who pays for sewer line repairs in Altoona or see sewer line repair in Altoona.
Why is my basement floor drain backing up?
Usually a blockage in the main sewer line, often tree roots in old clay pipe. The floor drain is the lowest opening, so sewage appears there first. Stop using water and call.
Can I connect my sump pump to the sewer?
No. The Altoona Water Authority prohibits sump pumps, downspouts and French drains from discharging into the sanitary sewer. Learn more about sump pumps and basement water.
Is there lead in Altoona’s water?
The Altoona Water Authority reports it hasn’t found lead service lines so far and has no lead-level problems. Very old homes can still have lead solder inside, so a water test gives you a clear answer.
Hot Water Tanks & Water Heaters
How long does a hot water tank last?
Usually about 8–12 years. Tankless heaters can last 20 years or more. More on water heater repair and replacement.
Is it worth repairing an old water heater?
If the tank is leaking from the body, or it’s over 10–12 years old and needs a major part, replacement usually makes more sense. Younger tanks with a bad element, thermostat or valve are worth repairing.
Is Altoona’s water hard?
It’s soft to moderately hard, about 2–5 grains per gallon according to the Altoona Water Authority, so most homes don’t need a softener.
Heating & Air Conditioning
Is no heat an emergency?
In an Altoona winter, yes. Below freezing, an unheated house can freeze its pipes within hours. See furnace, boiler and AC repair.
Should I repair or replace my old boiler?
Get the repair price first. Many boilers last 15–20 years or more. Replacement makes sense when repairs are frequent or cost close to half the price of a new boiler.
Choosing a Plumber
Do plumbers need a license in Pennsylvania?
There’s no statewide plumbing license outside Philadelphia and Allegheny County. Most home improvement contractors must register with the PA Attorney General, and you can check registration at hicsearch.attorneygeneral.gov.
How do I avoid a surprise plumbing bill?
Ask about the service fee up front, ask whether it’s flat-rate or hourly, get the price before work starts, ask for options, and ask for an itemized invoice.
Do you work on mobile homes and rental properties?
Yes. Mention it when you call so we send a plumber who handles that kind of property.
